Website care guide

How much does website maintenance cost?

Website maintenance keeps your site secure, fast and working, so your ads and enquiries do not stop without warning. Here is what it usually costs, what you should get for the money, and a checklist if you do it yourself.

Key points

  • Basic maintenance covers updates, backups, security and uptime monitoring.
  • Hosting, domain and paid plugins are usually extra.
  • A hacked or broken site costs far more than a year of maintenance.
  • If you do it yourself, follow a weekly, monthly and quarterly routine.

What website maintenance includes

TaskWhat it involves
Software updatesWordPress core, themes and plugins, tested so nothing breaks
BackupsDaily, stored away from your hosting, with tested restores
SecurityFirewall, malware scanning and login protection
Uptime monitoringAlerts if the site goes down
SpeedCaching, image optimisation and database clean-up

Typical costs

These are typical monthly ranges for a small business website. They depend on the size of the site, whether it is WordPress or a shop, and how quickly you need help.

Plan levelIndiaUKAustraliaWhat you get
Basic₹1,500 to ₹5,000£30 to £80A$50 to A$150Updates, backups, uptime and security monitoring
Standard₹5,000 to ₹15,000£80 to £250A$150 to A$400Basic plus content edits, speed work and monthly report
Advanced₹15,000+£250+A$400+Ecommerce or larger sites, priority support, development hours

Hosting is often separate. Cheap shared hosting is one of the most common reasons small business sites get slow or hacked.

What happens without maintenance

Outdated plugins are the most common way small sites are hacked. The result can be spam pages in Google, redirects to scam sites, or a "This site may be hacked" warning. Google Ads will disapprove ads pointing to a compromised site, so leads stop overnight. Cleaning up usually costs more than a year of maintenance. See our guide to fixing a compromised site.

Questions

Is website maintenance really necessary?

For any site that brings in business, yes. Software needs updates to stay secure, and forms and tracking can break silently. A monthly check catches problems before customers or Google do.

Is hosting included in website maintenance?

Sometimes. Many care plans include managed hosting; others assume you have your own. Ask before comparing prices.

How often should a WordPress site be updated?

Security updates as soon as possible, and other updates at least weekly, after taking a backup and testing on a copy where possible.

Can I maintain my website myself?

Yes, if you follow a regular routine and have off-server backups. Most business owners find it is easy to forget, which is when problems start.
